About the Artist
In the Studio 2021
Sandra Taggart energizes her work with her need to understand the essence of the physical and metaphysical components of our world directly and through telescopes and microscopes. Motivated by curiosity, wonder, awe, reverence, and apprehension, she knows several fields, including the fundamental workings of the universe, time, the environment, biodiversity, and social upheaval & disintegration.
Taggart uses paint, crystals, glitter, gel pens, pencils, pastels, performance, and video to explore and interpret her findings of our earth and the universe. Her process varies depending on what she deems the best way to present her thoughts. She either begins with an idea of how things work, e.g., time or the universe, or she is moved by current events, or is inspired by an image, usually one that evokes a strong emotion. The completed works result from exploration and contemplation of science, nature, and the human experience.
Taggart lives and works in Brooklyn, NY, and San Miguel de Allende, MX. She has a joint BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the University of Chicago. In addition, Taggart did graduate work in Educational Psychology at NYU and at Hunter College. She holds a certificate in Computer Science from NYU and studied botanical drawing at The New York Botanical Garden. In 2011, Taggart constructed the book "A Sketchbook for the Short History of the Universe.” In 2025, she was a finalist for the 13th Alexander Rutsch Award and Exhibition for Painting at the Pelham Art Center in Pelham, NY.....In 2014, she received a CAF Grant from the Brooklyn Arts Council.
